Basic decency is above his paygrade. Special Olympians deserve a humane President.

Update: Maria Shriver chips in too:

In a statement this morning, Shriver said, “While I am confident that President Obama never intended to offend anyone, the response that his comments have caused, coupled with the reaction of a primetime audience, demonstrate the need to continue to educate the non-disabled community on the issues that confront those with a developmental disability.”

“Often times we don’t realize that when we laugh at comments like this it hurts millions of people throughout the world,” added Shriver.

UPDATE:

Governor Comments on President’s Remarks on Leno

March 20, 2009, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin responded to remarks made last night by President Obama related to the Special Olympics on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

“I was shocked to learn of the comment made by President Obama about Special Olympics,” Governor Palin said. “This was a degrading remark about our world’s most precious and unique people, coming from the most powerful position in the world.

“These athletes overcome more challenges, discrimination and adversity than most of us ever will. By the way, these athletes can outperform many of us and we should be proud of them. I hope President Obama’s comments do not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community.”

In the midst of a terrible economic threat to the United States, the President continues to campaign.  He goes on Jay Leno’s show to joke around, and when talking about the time he spends bowling instead of leading the most powerful nation in the history of civilization, insults the Special Olympics.  Tapper writes:

“The first appearance by a sitting president on “The Tonight Show” may well end up being the last.  President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.  Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he’s gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.  He bowled a 129, the president said.  “That’s very good, Mr. President,” Leno said sarcastically.  It’s “like the Special Olympics or something,” the president said.

“You know how you can tell when a President has a bad day?  When his comparison of an American corporation to terrorists is the second-stupidest thing he said.
